Europe Trip 2013, Day 2

We loved everywhere we visited, but Rothenburg ob der Tauber (on the Tauber River) was definitely one of our top favorites. Our accommodations were gorgeous, and the town was just quintessentially European.

Steven did tons of research to pick each place we stayed, and he did a phenomenal job. This room was so pretty. I loved it!

View out our window of the window boxes (they are everywhere in Europe!) and the church across the street.

Rothenburg is famous for being one of the few cities to still have its wall intact (90% I believe?) after the WW11 bombings. You can see  in this picture the wall surrounding the town of Rothenburg and all of the beautiful buildings inside.
This is a picture of us at the entrance to the town.

This is the unassuming front of our hotel. The back had a beautiful garden.

A view of the bustling town. Lots of shops and places to eat.

Rothenburg is also known for "schneeballen"...a dough like pastry shaped into a ball.

Trying one out...not bad!

This is the most photographed spot in Rothenburg.

Rothenburg also has the Medieval Crime and Punishment Museum. It was fun to tour.

We were looking for an out of the way dinner spot and evidently looked like lost tourists. A really nice local gentleman named Herbst (above) graciously offered to walk us in the right direction. He showed us the way through the vineyard and to the double bridge. We loved talking to him!

The double bridge...the cool breeze off of this felt great!

After tons of walking, we found our dinner spot! Unter den Linden was very much a local spot. It was all outside and right by the Tauber River. You just order at the counter, and unlike everywhere else we had encountered thus far,  no one spoke English! We could not decipher the menu, so we asked around in the line and finally found someone who could speak a little English to give us some recommendations! We had a great time.

The next morning we had breakfast in the garden. It was wonderful! The meats, breads, and cheeses were all local, and the jams were made from the fruit trees in that very garden! It was absolutely picturesque there.

After breakfast we walked the wall. It was really neat to see the town from this view.

When we got back to our hotel, there was a message from Herbst our "tour guide" inviting us to his home! We had told him where we were staying. We walked to his house and knocked, but he did not answer. We were disappointed, but had to move on. Munich, here we come!
